How to Break Into Door to Door Sales
If you search how to break into door to door sales, you want the path, not a slogan. I am Jay Roberts. I started in 2016 in Houston at 19, no degree, no contacts. Best year: $472K in 2025, Kansas City. Net worth built from the work: over $2M. Eight markets. Here is the order I actually ran.
Step 1. Start in one city and stay long enough to learn it
2016 was Houston, $32K. I was bad. I kept the route. The markets after that, in order, were Houston again, Houston again, Dallas, Austin, Phoenix, Austin, Omaha, Kansas City, Kansas City, then Nashville.
Phoenix in 2021 was $463K. That is real. It is not the best year. The best year is 2025 in Kansas City, $472K, nonemployee compensation (pre-tax).
Pick a city where people own homes and you can knock every day. Do not bounce markets in week two.
Step 2. Write a pitch you can say tired
I use a short hook, one value line, and one question. If a line gets a no three times for the same reason, I rewrite that line, not the whole pitch.
Example: "I am Jay with Vivint. Two minutes to show you what is on the door, then you tell me if it is worth a longer look."
Step 3. Run a schedule you can repeat
I knocked most days, logged every door, and looked at the log at night. The pattern was boring. More conversations, more sales. Shoes matter more than a new script.
Step 4. Use a phone, not a stack of apps
A notes app and a map are enough to start. Log the address, the time, and the next step. Close the day when the log is done, not when you feel done.
Step 5. Get on a real team
I hired after I could sell on my own. I am building a 100-rep team for the 2027 season out of Jacksonville. No degree required. The interview is the filter.
15-min group interview, Tuesdays 8 PM ET, with Jay or Massimo.
